General Anaesthesia

Pre-operative Information for Dogs and Cats

- Adult cats and dogs should be starved for a minimum of 6 hours prior to sedation or

general anaesthesia to prevent nausea and vomiting. Very young, brachycephalic

(short-nosed, such as pugs and french bulldogs) or diabetic patients should not have

long periods without food. The vet will advise if this is the case for your pet.

- Water should be available until admission

- A normal meal should be provided no later than midnight the night before the

anaesthetic.

- No treats to be given after the last meal

- No oral medication the morning of the procedure unless instructed by the vet

Pre-operative Information for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs,Small Mammals

- Rabbits, guinea pigs and small mammals should not be starved prior to procedures.

Provide their food and water as normal.

- Please bring some of their usual food with them to the practice (hay, pellets and

vegetables) to ensure they eat as soon as possible after the procedure.

- If your animal is part of a bonded pair, it may be advisable to bring the companion animal

too to minimise stress.

- Water should be available until admission

Post-Operative Care Instructions

Proper postoperative care is vital for your pet’s health. While it is acknowledged that all

procedures carry some risks, you can minimise the risk of postoperative complications with

good postoperative care. Please note that treatment of postoperative complications will incur additional cost and will delay your pet’s healing process. It is therefore vital that you adhere to the instructions detailed below.
